Calgary Herald Christmas Fund

Each year at this time, The Calgary Herald’s Christmas Fund gathers donations to help out worthy community organizations and charities in the Calgary area. The Fund asked me to contribute to the campaign by writing a piece for the newspaper about my own encounters with the city’s poor and downtrodden.

I wrote about my work with former sex-trade workers at the Servant’s Anonymous Society. The women at SAS are at once fierce and warm; their stories both tragic and inspiring. Most of all, the women reveal that some of our city’s most vulnerable populations are victims of forces largely beyond their control. Their life stories have more than their fair share of villains. They are, then, deserving of both our empathy and our help.

The story is here.
