The Long Journey of Nathan Phelps

Figs

On the stroke of midnight on his 18th birthday, Nathan Phelps left the abuse and tyranny of his father’s Westboro Baptist Church. Phelps’ journey from the WBC’s venomous preaching eventually led him away from God altogether. Now Phelps is an avowed and vocal atheist, and an advocate for gay rights.

He is also a Calgarian. I had the opportunity to sit with Phelps earlier this year and hear his incredible life story. He is a man of great warmth and integrity, yet his animosity towards religion – all religion, not just the hateful creed of the WBC – will trouble many. My story about him appears in today’s Swerve Magazine and online here.
