The Walls That Hurt Us
I wrote an op-ed for the International New York Times about how the walls act upon the flesh. As I say in the piece, the economic and political ramifications of wall-building is oft-discussed. So, too, are the psychological effects of the walls on those that live in their shadows. I examine all of this in my book. But we must also remember that the walls are designed to inflict physical pain.
Writing this op-ed gave me the opportunity to talk about the work by Reviel Netz. I read his amazing book Barbed Wire: An Ecology of Modernity early on in my research for Walls. Not including his work in my book always felt like an omission to me, so I am pleased to finally refer to it now.
My op-ed can be found in the print edition of tomorrow’s International New York Times, or online here.
