Hi Mary. Thanks for writing, and for the update regarding garbage bins. Where along the fence are the bins being placed now?

As for the student demonstration: The only evidence I found were two articles on a website. One claims the 'attack' took place circa 1971. The other article, from the Montreal Mirror, claims it took place on 1970. Both articles can be found here:

I'll keep digging.

My comment timed out so here's another rewrite...
Have read your June 17th piece and can no longer take our fence for granted....
Nick agrees that the student incident was before 1970 -- In 1964 a petition from 38 nearby TMR residents prompted a Council vote on Oct. 21 to add a 4' fence section to the south (down to Jean Talon). Nick lives near where they join. He will try to check with a couple of friends.
I recently patrolled the fence/hedge with tape measure. It is 6'8" (ground to top of top rail), with the 4'6" south end. The outer (Mtl. side) hedge on both sections is trimmed to 6'8", and hedge on TMR side if often lower.
GARBAGE BIN DEVELOPMENT
This summer the garbage bins at the gates have been moved from the TMR to the Montreal side of the fence. They are used by dog walkers & garbage hiders & are frequently stinky. IS THIS AS PROVOCATION? Or is it just more landscaping to soften the severe appearance of the endless hedge/fence, fudgifying it with trees & garbage bins?
